The how, why and when of systems integration
Tuesday September 17, 2024 9:00am - 10:00am CDT
This presentation will focus on when, why and how to engage a systems integrator to ensure a painless and successful end result. This will be a 2 part (40 minute) presentation followed by Q & A.

Part 1) What is a systems integrator and why does my project need one? Not every project needs a systems integrator and during this portion we will differentiate between projects where one is not needed and projects where it would be best to include a systems integrator in the specifications. (20 minutes)

Part 2) Once I have determined my project needs a systems integrator, what is the best method for choosing one and getting them involved. During this portion we will go over how to specify a systems integrator, where the specifications should live in the spec documents and at what stage would it be best to engage the integrator.(20 minutes)

Influencing the Perception of Safety at Night with Human Centered Design
Tuesday September 17, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm CDT
Light has the power to change the way we perceive a place; to make it safer, more attractive, and more inviting. However, our urban areas are not always optimized for human activity after dark and are often more focused on illumination targets and the needs of vehicular traffic, than our visual needs to fully interpret the scene. Lighting design needs to consciously consider all types of social movement at night.

We shall discuss the research and practical applications of NVAs (Nighttime Vulnerability Assessment), and explore how they can provide us with the necessary information through the case study areas to allow us to engage with concepts of pedestrian safety and equal access after dark, reflect on possible lighting vulnerabilities, assess the risks involved, and act to mitigate and reduce the risk to the public.

Our main focus will be how NVAs can be used within Lighting Masterplans to implement lighting changes that are relevant to the space, rather than just adding more lighting where it isn’t necessarily required or would add into existing issues.

Using a more human centred design approach alongside the NVA data allow us to understand how different people move around our cities in the hours of darkness. Being marginalized in society, whether through gender, ethnicity, class, age, sexuality, or ability, can limit and hinder one’s ability to feel safe and comfortably navigate public spaces at night, and we as designers need to ensure we design our spaces so that everyone feels safe within them.

WILD- Standing Out by Looking In: Creating Impact and Lasting Impressions with your Personal Brand
Tuesday September 17, 2024 12:00pm - 1:00pm CDT
Women in Lighting+Design DFW is excited to have Amy Bonder, CCO at Luminii speak at ArchLIGHT Summit. Ms. Bonder will be speaking about how Brand statements are integral to long term career development. Personal branding is how you tell your authentic story to others which helps bolter confidence and credibility within your industry and sphere of influence. It helps with building trust, driving focus, networking while setting oneself apart from others. A clearly defined brand statement helps you really laser in on your passion and your expertise. It allows you to have a compass to drive choices on: types of projects that you want to design; cultures in a company that suit you; committees that allow you to feed your passion while delivering your expertise. A brand statement that is effectively communicated allows others to truly understand who you are as a career professional. Employers, customers, peers, etc. can identify you with types or work while getting excited about what you have to say. Careerblast.tv said that a personal brand "allows you to promote yourself at work so your audience knows exactly what you stand for. People with strong personal brands are authentic, stand out from the crowd, and are able to deliver their unique set of skills to a company with moxie and confidence".

Indian Community School Case Study
Tuesday September 17, 2024 2:30pm - 3:30pm CDT
Indigenous culture is at the heart of Indian Community School in Franklin, Wisconsin. Designed by studio:indigenous, the 150,000-sq-ft school serving grades K4-8 merges cultural values with education by bringing the surrounding natural environment into the striking interior learning spaces and gathering centers. Woven along a wooded hillside, the building is made of wood, copper, and limestone, with large windows offering expansive views of the local landscape. Inside, the use of natural materials—additional wood, marble, and glass—reinforces the connection with the outdoors, while migratory paths throughout support flow in a space created to foster community.

The school’s original lighting, circa 2007, not only failed to showcase its award-winning architectural design, but also failed to serve the teachers and students that use the building every day. The school’s upgraded lighting system, completed in 2023, highlights the building’s original architectural concepts and provides adequate functional illumination in classrooms and common areas, enhancing visual comfort and productivity, as well as safety and security, inside and out.

This project was featured on the cover of designing lighting magazine - May 2024 issue
