Photometry In Action
Wednesday September 18, 2024 9:00am - 10:30am CDT
Photometry in Action
Have you ever wondered how those mysterious .ies files are generated? Or how to compare the performance of one lighting fixture to another?

Photometry in Action is a hands-on workshop exploring luminaire photometry to be delivered using a bench-top goniophotometer fully capable of generating a complete luminaire photometric report, including luminous intensity and spectral data along with a .ies file.

Since many lighting designers have not had an opportunity to actually see the photometric measurement process, but use luminaire photometry in their analyses and designs, this workshop provides an opportunity to better understand the photometric process and the data designers are typically using.

The workshop will feature a “round-robin” rotation of one group of participants working with the bench-top goniophotometer to actually measure a luminaire, while another group is receiving a presentation of the elements of a representative photometric report, essentially covering the “anatomy” of a photometric report.

Luminaire selection criteria, such as luminance recommendations, will also be addressed.

The third portion of the workshop will be to create a full photometric report from the .ies file using photometry processing software. Each group will generate a report for the luminaire they measure and compare it against the luminaire selection criteria as well as the other group's luminaire.

Participants will leave with the photometric file, the .ies file, the photometric report, and access to the goniophotometer software for further exploration following the workshop.

Planning for Lighting: Advocating for Better Lighting Regulations in our Cities
Wednesday September 18, 2024 10:00am - 11:00am CDT
Any lighting project in our communities - whether for interiors, the outdoors, or infrastructure like roadways - presents our industry with the opportunity to be a good neighbor to those around us or become a nuisance, uphold our obligations to ecological responsibility, and to develop infrastructure lighting that is safe and equitable without leaving the needs of some users behind.

However, conversations with city staff and community members over what makes a quality lighting design and what to expect from our work can be difficult. Many municipal lighting regulations are too minimal or out of date to be useful in lighting design work.

This presentation will provide a vision for what a comprehensive lighting master plan, a lighting ordinance, or both can accomplish for the communities where attendees live and work. These documents help facilitate communication, improve the efficiency of lighting projects by setting clearer expectations, and show neighbors (and ourselves) what to expect from the lighting around them.

The process of developing a lighting master plan offers the opportunity for public outreach and identifying areas currently underserved by lighting infrastructure, improving awareness and equity. For city staff, a dedicated lighting ordinance gives them a more enforceable tool to address and prevent lighting issues in their communities while gaining insight into our industry.

Improving lighting regulations in the areas we live and work in is a win-win scenario we can all advocate for.

Lighting Designer says "tomato", Owner hears "orange"
Wednesday September 18, 2024 12:00pm - 1:00pm CDT
Managing and working through realistic (and sometimes not realistic) Owner perceptions on lighting design can add another layer of complexity to project outcomes. How do we as lighting designers bridge the sometimes large education gap with owners and what to expect in their newly lit buildings? In this presentation, two experienced lighting designers will walk through some of their more memorable Owner requests and misconceptions for how they perceive lighting. Engaging with the audience on how to manage these sometimes tricky situations and gain an outcome that is desirable for all parties.

Showroom Tour- Trends In Materials
Wednesday September 18, 2024 3:00pm - 4:00pm CDT
Join us on this hosted Tour where we will visit participating showrooms where our docent will discuss and identify "Trends in Materials".

Designers are opting for interesting textures over high-gloss surfaces while mixing materials to add warmth and interest. Many of these material choices incorporate natural elements. When used effectively, these varied finishes can indicate a shift in use within a larger open space. For example, a change in flooring material can indicate a more intimate lounge area or even aid in way finding.

Lighting is essential for emphasizing textures and materials, as well as defining different areas within a space. It continues to evolve with new trends and innovations in design, such as using light to highlight textured walls or create focal points. Varying brightness levels can add movement and visual appeal to office spaces.

Join us as we are guided to see what's trending!
